Lover, a quaint village in Wiltshire, is embracing its reputation as the UK’s most romantic village with grand Valentine’s Day preparations. This charming spot has become famous for its unique tradition sending love letters worldwide with a special Lover postmark.

A Special Valentine’s Tradition

Lover is a village with a name that makes it a popular place for couples to send romantic letters. For over 40 years, it had a special Valentine’s Day postal service, but the official post office closed in 2008. To keep the tradition alive, locals stepped in.

In 2016, the Lover Community Trust was created to restart the Valentine’s service. Every year, people from around the world, including Australia, the U.S., and even Antarctica send their cards to Lover.

Volunteers then hand-stamp each one with the special “Love from Lover” mark before sending them out. Orders can be made online or at a temporary post office.

Decorations and Community Spirit

Beyond the postal service, the village embraces the Valentine’s theme in every way possible. Streets and buildings are decorated with paper hearts, creating a picturesque setting for visitors and residents alike.

The Valentine’s campaign is not just about spreading love; it also helps the village. Funds raised from the postal service go directly back into the community. Past projects have included restoring the Old School building, an important historic landmark in Lover.

Lover’s tradition has gained international attention, featuring on Australian television and even airport screens in the U.S. Sometimes, the team had to adapt their technology to process non-English addresses, particularly for orders from China.

Despite its global reach, one common misconception remains many people mispronounce the village’s name. While it looks like it should be said as “lover” (like a romantic partner), it is pronounced “Lover” to rhyme with “Dover.”

Through its heartwarming efforts, Lover continues to prove that small villages can make a big impact, turning a simple name into a worldwide symbol of love.​
